Roppongi

Roppongi, Tokyo, Japan

Roppongi, a section of Tokyo's Minato-ku Ward, is the most popular nightlife district among foreigners, offering a large number of foreigner friendly bars, restaurants and night clubs. Here you can eat at some of Tokyo's finest Thai, Indian, fusion and other world restaurants. This international district is also home to many embassies, foreign companies, a large expat community, and Japan's largest urban redevelopment centers, Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown.

Roppongi being loud, blunt and intrusive, is quite a contrast to other areas of Tokyo. In recent years it's been characterized by a dualism, with stylish restaurants and boutiques on one hand, and a lively, sometimes seedy nightlife on the other. The hostess bars line the neon-lit streets, amongst clubs with beefy bouncers and drunk westerners. Moving around in Roppongi can sometimes feel like swimming in an ocean filled with piranhas.

The somewhat negative image of Roppongi hasn't discouraged people from coming here. On the contrary, it's one of Tokyo's livelier scenes and it's always crowded. Urban planners, however, were determined to wash away the negative image and give Roppongi a new face, resulting in two major redevelopment projects Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown. This was soon followed by the opening of the National Art Center, Japan's largest art museum. It has put the district onto Tokyo's cultural map and forms the "Art Triangle Roppongi" together with the Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo Midtown and the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills.
